Geebung’s park has no name but has loads of personality
It’s amazing when you think about how much parkland is available for public use throughout inner Brisbane suburbs. In Geebung for instance, there’s a lovely green catchment of public parkland accessible via Robinson Road West or Murphy Road, which is like a sweet oasis in the middle of a bustling little metropolis.
At first glance, it looks like some sparse bush and plenty of green grass but once you get in there, you’ll realise there’s lots of scope for fun and exercise. There’s a half basketball court so you can work up a sweat shooting baskets after work, instead of pounding away on a treadmill inside the four walls of a gym or getting dirty and dusty mowing your lawn. How cool is it to have access to free facilities like that? Just take your own ball and a few mates who are willing to go head to head with you for a couple of hours. Awesome.
Those who like to don the lycra and pedal from A to Z with a stop at C, H and W will love this park. It’s on the way to and from a number of other north Brisbane suburbs. The bike path is safe, flat and easy going and makes for a practically effortless commute. It’s not all sun drenched; there are many shady trees that line the pathway. Brisbane City Council has spent a whole lot of moolah on the local bike network and not so long ago, invested over a million dollars in linking Robinson Road West with Murphy Road to make it all more user-friendly than ever. The official name is the Zillman Waterholes Bikeway – give it a go!
Another element of this park is the aforementioned ‘Waterholes’. This is a treasured, natural asset and is kept in pristine condition with projects such as Planet Ark’s Tree Day – where work was carried out by volunteers to shade the creek from weeds and ensure the preservation of the important habitat for multiple species of wildlife. Parrots, owls, gliders, flying foxes, waterfowl and possums make their home there as well as turtles, ducks and many other bird species.
This unnamed park is a local gem. If you live in Geebung or are just looking for somewhere new to explore, head on down to take a look. Take your footy or a cricket ball and bats and have a brilliant time just being outside.
