How To Get An ABN For A Lawn Mowing Business

How To Get An ABN For A Lawn Mowing Business

If you enjoy mowing lawns and would like to start to make money from lawnmowing – either full-time or part-time – one of the first things you’ll need (if you’re here in Australia) is an ABN for your lawn mowing business.

What is an ABN?

An ABN is an Australian Business Number issued by the Australian government.

How much does an ABN cost?

Good news! An ABN is free.

How hard is it get an ABN?

It’s easy to get an ABN. Just fill in the short form here on the Australian Business Register.

Why do I need an ABN for my lawn mowing business?

Here are four good reasons to get an ABN for your mowing business:

1. Confirm your business identity to others
Customers are savvy these days. If they can’t find you on the ABN lookup, they may not want to do business with you when you order or invoice – even if it is just mowing their lawn. That means that if you don’t get an ABN, you run the risk of losing potential income because the customer does not trust you.

2. Avoid Pay as You Go (PAYG) tax on payments your business receives
If you do not quote your ABN, businesses using your services are required to withhold PAYG tax from the money they are due to pay you. To avoid this, get an ABN and quote it every time your lawnmowing business orders or invoices.

3. Claim Goods and Services Tax (GST) credits
If your lawn mowing business is charged GST for goods and/or services, you can claim that GST back if you have an ABN. This is called a GST credit (or an input tax credit – a credit for the tax included in the price of your business inputs). And which new lawn mowing business wouldn’t want money back?

4. Get an Australian domain name
A domain name is the official term for a website’s name/address. For example, www.GreenSocks.com.au or GreenSocks.com.au is our domain name. Yours might be BestLawnMowingEver.com.au or TomsMowing.com. To register an Australian domain name, you’ll likely be asked for your business ABN from the domain provider selling you the domain. So you may as well get an ABN as soon as possible, so that when you want to get a website for your lawn mowing business, to avoid any delays when you want to secure your ideal website name.
