Welcome to our GreenSocks wrap-up of week 10 highlights from our River City Labs (muru-D) startup accelerator. Only one masterclass again this week, with the rest of the time allocated for us to keep chasing our November 30 traction targets. (Traction will be one of the deciding factors for which teams get offered the follow-on 3-month-$20k-for-3%-equity deal). Here’s what our accelerator teams got up to:
Puntaa & River City Labs pitch at Gold Coast Demo Day
Gold Coast Demo Day, an official event of Global Entrepreneurship Week, was held at Bond Uni on the Gold Coast. Puntaa’s Nick Heaney and RCL’s Aaron Birkby had an opportunity to pitch. Also celebrated on the night were entrepreneurs from Club Kidpreneur, Startup Apprentice, City of Gold Coast’s Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards, Startup Creative, Bond Business Accelerator, and Gold Coast Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Jason Ganis, and more.
Masterclass from muru-D’s @PricingBen
Our favourite pricing specialist (and closet classical music aficionado) Ben Li came up from muru-D HQ in Sydney to teach us how to price our
beer products and services. Here are the main takeaways from Ben’s session:
- Keep your prices simple – it helps both you and your customers
- What’s your value to your customer? Work this out and that’s the price you can charge. And remember that your money ask cannot exceed your (perceived) value delivered.
- Think: What would customers be doing if they weren’t using your product?
- Three-tiered pricing (aka 3 options to choose from) is the most common
ParkFit – New version
Since pivoting only a couple of weeks ago, the new version of ParkFit went live in week 10 and things have been hectic for the ParkFit team. With the app now letting people enter in their own workout circuits, there has been a jump in usage. So much yet to do, but the team are feeling optimistic about the future for ParkFit.
River City Labs expanding in 2016
The official announcement was made that River City Labs will double in size in 2016, moving to renovated office space in Brisbane’s landmark TC Beirne building. Located between Brunswick Street Mall and the Chinatown Mall in Fortitude Valley, RCL’s new home only be a block or so from the current hub, which means it’ll still have easy access to bus and train routes – a must for startup founders on a shoestring budget. Thanks Steve!
Spark Bureau launches on the Sunshine Coast
When Aaron wasn’t looking (and when the lawn mowing jobs jobs were under control), I snuck back up the M1 to join my Sunshine Coast startup family for the launch of the Sunshine Coast’s River-City-Labs-equivalent, Spark Bureau (headed up by Zach Johnson). ANZ sponsored the big night and The Hon Mal Brough joined the festivities to announce a $200k federal government grant to kickstart Spark Bureau’s success. Thanks guys!
The Crazy Horse Guy
In what looks like a Puntaa bet to see who can rival Richard’s crazy idea last week (that landed on the home page TheCourierMail!), Jordan Oudejans donned a horse head to read Puntaa’s mid-week horserace tips. If you haven’t seen the video, jump onto the Puntaa Facebook page and scroll to November 18. Especially stay tuned for his final moments. Oscar-worthy!
Outbound gets another feature in the App Store
Congrats to Ryan, Mark and Brent from Outbound for another feature in the App Store this week. Awesome!

Poker Night 2 – Startups Vs Investors
Following on from the inaugural Startups Vs Investors Poker Night in Week 8 (won by Brisbane investor Mat Myers), Puntaa are already scheduling a follow-up night. (Hate to lose, do we boys?) Stay tuned to Puntaa’s social media for details soon on how to buy tickets to the big night
Steve Baxter bags a Logie Nomination
Congrats Steve! To vote for Steve (as a way of thanking him for everything he does for the Brisbane startup ecosystem?) just jump here. If, like me, you don’t watch much TV, you’ll have to skip past hundreds of unfamiliar names to find him. But to save time, look for the button “I do not wish to vote in this category” on some screens. Then keep your eyes peeled for Steve in the “New Talent” section. And vote for Shark Tank as well?
Meanwhile, back in lawn mowing land…
Thanks to awesome work again this week by amazing lawn mowing providers like Patrick…
…we received more customer testimonials, like this one from Adam in Sandstone Point (who surprised us with three unsolicited testimonials to choose from). Thanks Adam!
And, that’s a wrap!
Thanks Everyone for your support and enjoy your week!
