Manly: Perfect Place for a Stroll by the Water

If you know Sydney, you’d know that although it might not have many big grassy lawns along its expensive coastline, it does have more than 100 beaches – including surf beaches and harbour coves, so if you love the water, Sydney is the place to be.

Manly, a 20-30 minute ferry ride from Sydney’s Circular Quay, and Manly Beach is known internationally as one of the three most famous Sydney beaches (the other two are Bondi Beach and Coogee Beach).

But for Sydney locals, Manly is much more than just its world famous surf beach. It’s impressive coastline water views also make it the perfect place for a Sunday stroll by the water when you’ve finished your weekend lawn mowing and garden chores.

A good place to start is at the cove in Balgowlah. Park the car, grab a delicious coffee at the park that overlooks the cafe, let the kids run wild on the playground and the big patch of grassy lawn, then grab your water bottles and head along the gorgeous coastal walk to Manly.

Feel free to stop on the grass to take in the view, especially if your kids love rolling in the lawn!

If you feel like a morning swim to wake you up, take a dip in the Fairlight ocean pool. But be warned, unless it’s in the heat of summer, you’d really need to have done a lot of lawnmowing in the morning to want to dip in this pool. For most of the year, it’s f-r-e-e-z-i-n-g.

Sometimes I wonder why we pay big money to go overseas for pristine water when we have the same water here in our Sydney backyard.

Once you finish the Manly coastline walk, and you’ve done a bit of shopping in the Manly pedestrian mall, there’s lots to watch at Manly’s surf beach. Both locals and tourists (and yes, city slickers coming across on the ferry each weekend are called “tourists” by the locals here in Manly) love Manly Beach because it always has such a relaxing atmosphere about it that it’s easy to forget the finance hub of Australia is only a 20 minute ferry ride away!

But if you’d rather keep walking than stop at the surf beach, you can continue around North Head to the more protected Shelly Beach (one of the best things to do in Sydney for kids) or stop along the way at the Fairy Bower Pool (also usually freezing outside of peak Summer swimming times).
